Porro Inspired Accent Table
In my 3rd year Bachelor of Design furniture class we were to choose an existing design company, and design an accent table of fairly small proportions to fit in their collection. Then with adequate sketch models we were to build a full scale prototype. My table evolved out of many sketches, and changed through many shapes. in the end i had to simplify the design due to time constraints in the building phase. My final concept was a small accent table which had an inner and an outer portion, with the inside divided by a shelf. To hide the contents of the shelf i opted for a sliding panel that slid up and down without any visible hardware. The Floating door as i call it, works on a very simple principle, gravity and friction. when you want the door down, you simply slide it down and it stays put. no ifs ands or buts… and the same goes for any position. adjust it and it stays. simple as that. the outer shell took a while to finish, the prototype being constructed of many layers of 1″ mdf, with more layers of bondo and primer. The inner shelving area was created with solid maple edging, and a maple veneered center. in the end it looked like solid maple shelves.
