Computer Desk Design
Computer Desk (Workstation)
Product form vs. function.
In recent years laptop computers have gained popularity over the large desktop machines of the past. The portability and power of the new generation gear frees the user from the typical cubical office and makes it possible to use the “beautifully” designed equipment virtually anywhere. With the advent of the laptop there is no need for large and bulky CPU boxes and massive monitors to occupy large areas on desks. Style is the essence of the new computer desk design. Aesthetically pleasing looking items are what the new generation of computer buyer wants, as we can see in the computer industry from the new Dell machines to next-generation Macintosh G5’s, which play with the user’s emotions through form, colour and texture.” excerpt taken from the project brief.
In the end the desk had to be designed for a specific manufacturing process – in this case CNC Panel Milling, thus had to be constructed entirely from flat stock material: MDF, Plywood, Acrylic, etc. Off-the-shelf fasteners could be used. we also had to consider manufacturer and user transport, ie: it had to be collapsible or nest for portability. With all this in mind we had to create the product, then draw up a set of working drawings for the product. Drawings included our basic orthographics, exploded views, detailed views, material listings, cnc cut plans, cost estimates and more. Renderings of the final product along with our plans were presented and critiqued in the end.
Take a look at all the plans and renders below.
Enjoy.
