Modern Childrens Step Stool

Industrial Design, Photography 1 Comment

This was a project completed in the 2nd year of my B.Des. The idea was to come up with a ton of sketches and ideations for a fun childrens stool. We then had to create models, blueprints and material tests before we could begin construction. This particular piece uses 3 layers of laminated rubber-ply to hold the curve shape which when dry can hold my weight (180lbs) with minor flexing. The frame was constructed out of tubular steel which was bent on a pipe bender then welded together.  In order to hold the rubber-ply in position a large mold was created to create the unique shape. For finishing a veneer was applied then a blue stain to make it more attractive for a child. The original design was hardware free, but due to time constraints screws ended up being used instead to fasten the step to the fame.
